Who we are
Local Gap operates Local Gap (localgap.co.nz), a tool that helps web designers, digital marketers and agencies across New Zealand find local businesses that may benefit from a stronger online presence. This policy explains what information we handle, why, and your rights under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Information you provide
- Account details: your name, email address and a password (stored as a hash by our authentication provider, Supabase). We record the version and time at which you accepted our Terms of Use and this policy.
- Leads and notes: the businesses you save (as a Google place reference only), the stage you set (saved, contacted, visited, won, lost, dismissed), dates you record, labels, route names and any notes you type. Notes may contain personal information about people you meet; you are responsible for what you write.
- Preferences: your chosen suburb, search radius and filters, stored in your browser.
Information created when you use Local Gap
- Search terms and map positions: when you press Search, the map centre, radius, category and any text you typed are sent from our server to Google Maps Platform to find businesses.
- Location: only if you press "Use my location" and accept the explanation shown first. Your coordinates are used to centre the map, sort results and start routes, are sent to Google Maps Platform for searches and route calculations, are held in memory while the tab is open, and are never saved by us. You can decline, pick a suburb instead, use "Forget my location" in Settings, or revoke the site permission in your browser.
- Usage counts: we count how many searches, detail look-ups and route calculations your account makes per minute, day and month to enforce fair-use limits. Only counts are stored, not what you searched for.
- IP addresses and security logs: our hosting provider (Vercel) and authentication provider (Supabase) receive your IP address and browser details to deliver the service and prevent abuse. Our server logs record errors without personal content.
Google Maps Platform
Local Gap includes Google Maps features and content. The map, business names, addresses, phone numbers, ratings, review counts, website links and route information are provided by Google Maps Platform and displayed for your current session only; we do not store them. When you use these features, Google receives the requests our server makes on your behalf (including search terms, map coordinates and, if you allowed it, your location) and, for the map itself, your browser interacts with Google directly. Your use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
Website status colours reflect what Google Maps currently lists for a business. A red pin means "no website listed by Google Maps", not that the business has no website.
Why we process information
- To provide the service you asked for (search, map, leads, routes).
- To keep your account secure and enforce fair-use limits.
- To meet our obligations to our data providers.
- We do not sell personal information and do not use advertising trackers or analytics scripts.
Retention
- Account, leads, routes and notes: until you delete them or delete your account.
- Usage counts: current month plus the previous twelve months, then deleted.
- Location: not retained.
- Google-provided business details: not retained beyond your current session.
- Hosting and authentication logs: per Vercel's and Supabase's retention (typically days to weeks).
Your rights
You can see, correct and delete your leads and notes in the app. You can delete your whole account and all associated data from Settings; this is immediate and permanent. To request access to or correction of any other personal information we hold, contact us using the details below. We will respond within 20 working days as required by the Privacy Act 2020. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
